THE LABOUR MARKET.
The Journal of the fiejwtnient of Labour published on September 16th, reports as follows:— Rangiora—Building trades—Very dtdL All other trades very quiet. Unskilled labour—Very little work doing in the district, and a number of local residents have nothing to do. There is no immediate prospect of improvement. Christchurch — Building trades — Dull during the month. There are, however, signs of improvement. Four carpenters, six painters, and two plasterers have been sent* to Government works during the month. Engineering, iron, &c—Still busy, v Boofc trade—Quieter than last month, very poor time has been made. Clothing trade—No improvement; generally dull in all these industries. Retail trade (general)— This has been an unusually quiet month ; complaints are general that little business has been done. Miscellaneous—Paintingtrade—Still very dull. Brushmaking —Very busy. Sawmills making good time. Woollen mill —Very busy indeed. Unskilled labour— Thoro is a large number of men out of work. Employment by private persons has been very scarce this winter.
Timani—Building trades—Rather slack j a number of tradesmen idle. Engineering, iron, &c—Busy; all employees working full time. Boot trade—Doll; a great falling off since last month, a number of employees working ehort time. Clothing trade—Dull; very little doing. Retail trade (general)— Slack, but signs of improvement. Unskilled labour—Very few local men unemployed at present. Waimate—Building trade—Busy; all branches of labour fully employed. Boot trade—Busy; all hands fully employed. Clothing trade—Fairly busy. Retail trade (general)— Good. Unskilled labour—Owing to the drought breaking up work has been more plentiful, and there are few idle men about; it has been the best winter in the .way of employment for yearepast.
