ANOTHER ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.

The German Committee for Antarctic Exploration, under the Presidency of Professor Neumeyer, has made a grand plau for an expedition to the South Pole. The expedition is to consist of two ships, which arc to penetrate to the meridian of Kerguelcii Island, that is, to the south of the Indian Ocean, between Africa and Australia, in order to explore a part of the Antarctic Ocean till now scarcely touched upon. In the South of the Polar circle an observation station is to be erected in some yet to be discovered land, where a part of the scientific staff of the expedition is to remain for a whole year, or rather, for two entire Antarctic winters, and undertake careful local observations, especially of meteorological and magnetic phenomena. One of the two ships of the expedition is to keep up communication with the outer world, while the other ship is to explore unknown regions and attempt geographical discoveries on a grand scale, towards the magnetic South Pole. As it is intended to go behind the mysterious coasts of Wilkes Land and Victoria Land, important discoveries are expected. The cost of the whole expedition is calculated ab £47,500.
