GERMAN NAILS.

As so much has been written and said of late as to German competition in the world's market, it may be as well to add a contribution from the United Slates. In the course of an article on the American wire trade, the Pittsburgh Despatch asserts that there is a movement on foot among German wire manufacturers to drive the Americans out of the wire market. In order that this may be accomplished the manufacturers of the Rhenish provinces are said to be raising funds for export bounties, and are otherwise strengthening themselves for a big fight. Export Dountiee are to be paid out of this fund on all shipments to foreign countries. The maximum tonnage thus subsidised has been placed at 30,000 tons. The large proportion of wire shipped to Australia consists of German and Belgian makes, and hence this suggested battle with the American manufacturers is of some colonial interest.
