VICTORIAN BEET SUGAR. In view of the fact that the imposition of a higher duty on beet sugar is being urged in some quarters in this colony, it is of interest to note that the next few months will probably see Victoria well on the way to become a competitor in the colonial markets with this particular article. The erection of the Maffra Beet Sugar Company's sugar mill is progressing very rapidly. The engineer is said to be making preparation for reception of mill machinery due at the end of this month, aud every effort is being put forth to enable the first campaign to start early in April. Beet seed to plant 2000 acres is expected to reach Melbourne this month. 1740 acres of rich land are under cultivation and ready for planting ; and as the season is the most favourable experienced for many years past, an exceptional yield may be anticipated. The Company has based its calculations on 20 tons to the acre, but yields of test patches have gone as high as 50 to 60 tons of beets, with a percentage ot 12| to 16 per cent, of saccharine. The first season's output of high-class whites is estimated to reach 4000 to 5000 tons.
