ROAD BOARDS.

AVON. The monthly meeting of the Avon Board w<l3 held on Monday. Present—Mr C. Burgess (Chairman), and Messrs Spencer, Hawken, Homer and Parish. A deputation of residents near the Lower Styx waited on the Board with reference to the height of the water in the river. The terms of the contract for cleaning the river were read, and the deputation was informed that the Board's surveyor would do his best to see that the tennß of the contract were carried out. With this the deputation stated they would be satisfied and withdrew. Correspondence was read—From Christchuroh Drainage Board asking for an account of penalties collected on last year's rates. To be supplied, also consenting to remit rates on Papanui Library. From the Selwyn County Council, to the same effect, and also a circular offering a bonus of £1 for every £2 expended by the Board in the destruction of small birds. Received. From the Seoretary to the Treasury, Wellington, re interest on the New Brighton Loan Fund, and asking for a copy of the deed between the New Brighton Council and the Board, certified by the Chairman and sealed with the Board's seal. It was resolved to comply with the request. The Board's seal was ■ ordered to be affixed to the agreement between the Board and Miss Jones with reference to the sale of the gravel pit at any fnture time. The Surveyor's report was approved. The Surveyor also reported that he had inspected the river Styx from Rhodea'a main drain to the North road, and had given notice to the contractor to clean the weeds out. of the lower Styx. v The Clerk was instructed to write to the Drainage Board for the amount they agreed to pay towards the cleaning of the upper Styx, and the action of the Surveyor in giving notice to the contractor was approved. The question of cleaning the Kaput one Creek was discussed, and the Clerk instructed to see what contributions could be obtained towards the work from the residents, and in the event of sufficient being subscribed to call for tenders for the work. A request made through the Chairman that the name of the River road should be altered to Otakaro, the Maori name for the Avon, was agreed to by the Board. The finance report showed that the overdraft at

the Bank was £520 10s lid, and the reeeint. for the month were £201 16s 9d. Accounts amounting to £167 13s bd were ordered tn be paid. Q
