AUCKLAND, September 16. At the Supreme Court Mr Justice Connolly sat in divorce. The petitioner was Alice Mayhew, now of Taupiri, aud the respondent Samuel Frederick Mayhew, at one time a school teacher of Auckland. The petitioner prayed for a dissolution of her marriage on the grounds of adultery and desertion, without reasonable excuse, for two years and upwards. The respondent was not represented. In her evidence the petitioner said she had had no communication with her husband whatever for fifteen yeara. He intimated to her he intended to leave her altogether. His Honour granted a decree nisi. Costs on the middle scale.

Mrs Finnegan was committed for trial on a charge of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Detective Maddern to-day arrested on warrant a lawyer's clerk on a charge of stealing £197. It appears that a cheque for the amount was entrusted to him on the 9th inst. to pay into the Bank on behalf of one of his employers' clients. It is alleged that the accused cashed the cheque instead of banking it. MASTERTON, September 16. The appeal of the Rev. J. C. Andrew against the requisition of the Inspector that the Ic;i station shearing accommodation should be improved, was dismissed by Mr Haseldcn, S.M., with costs £6 183. NAPIER, September 16. At the Supreme Court, John Delaney, aged 17 yeare, was convicted of indecent assault, and sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment. This completes the criminal business. In the Divorce Court a decree nisi was granted in the case of Jas. May Simonds v Annie May Simonds and Jas. Gray. In bankruptcy, the discbarge of S. Quinn, commission agent, was granted subject to his paying £175, sufficient to pay 5s in the £ on the unsecured debts. The Land Board to-day investigated a case ot alleged dummyism in connection with the Elsihorpe estate. Peter Brady, who drew a section of 581 acres and who had since applied to have it transferred to John McCauley, who owns an adjoiuing section, it was alleged had bought as agent for McCaulcy. The Board docided that the evidence was not sufficient to justify any action being taken for the present. At the annual meeting of the Free Association the membership was reported to be 2144 and the funds in hand £703 6s 7d. Mr VV. Nelson (Nelson Broa. and Co.) was re-elested President. WELLINGTON, September 16. The Examiners appointed by the .Board ot Theological Studies of the Church of England have awarded all four scholarships to students of St. John's College, Auckland. During the hearing of the furniture dispute by the Conciliation Board, the point was raised whether employers of non-Union hands were affected by a dispute between the Union and their particular trade. The Chairman obtained the opinion of Judges Williams and Denniston, who hold that the Board had jurisdiction in any dispute, even thougii a -ma3ter bad no Union men in his employ. The Chairman, however, intimated that iv future the Unions must take cai-o to have it decided that there was a dispute before coming to the Board. GKKYMOUTH, September 16. The Borongh Council this evening, by 6 to 3, affirmed the desirableness of purchasing the Greymouth Gas Company's gasworks. The Company intended bringiug a Bill before Parliament this session to define and secure their tenure, but it was found they did not publish their proposal soon enough to comply with the Standing Orders, and they resolved to proceed no further for the present year. NELSON, September 16. The Nelson Acclimatisation Society tonight chose delegates to attend the Conference at Wellington on the 28th. Mr J. Pollock will be one. DUJVEDIN", September 16. In connection with the inquiry held by the Education Board as to au alteration made in the plans of the Board's new offices after theae had been approved ofi a motion was carried that the architect committed an error of judgineut iv altering or agreeing to alter the signed plan without communicating with the Chairman, and that the Secretary transgressed his proper duties in interfering with the architect, and was at fault in not at once informing the Board of the charge. INVERCAIK4ILL, September 16. Joseph Harrold, of Stewart Island, today pleaded guilty to a charge of sly grjg selling and was fined £15. Informations against two other Island residents are to be heard this afternoon. The Magistrate stated that as the penalties inflicted in the past seemed to be no deterrent, he would, unless there were very special reasons for acting otherwise, impose the full penalty allowed by the law in all future cases.
