WELCOME TO COLONEL PITT.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NELSON, September 16. Colonel Pitt, who commanded the Now Zealand contingent, was welcomed to-night »t a monster public social. An address from the citizens was read by the Mayor, Mr Trask, and acknowledged by the recipient, who, in a lengthy speech, narrated interesting events connected with his travels »nd experiences of tho contingent. He paid a very high compliment to tho officers •nd men under his command, and said he •ooked upon to-night's gathering more iv the light of a compliment to the contingent wan to himself personally. In die course of hie remarks he gave an emphatic denial to the stories that, the men were n6t proP«ly fed, for not only did they get the regulation rations but the New Zealand Government also provided for them. He alluded to the contingent as the only puroly Volunteer body at the Jubilee save the Ceylon contingent. He felt proud to have commanded such a fine body of men, who had done credit to tho colony, and had received congratulations for their splendid physique and the excellence of their drill.
