(PRESS ASSOCIATION TKLRORAMS.) AUCKLAND, August 27. The Auckland Gas Company have made fresh proposals for lighting the city with incandescent lamps without extra charge, provided twenty-two additional lamps are erected to those existing, 387, at an annual cost per lamp of &33 9d. The Governor's levee at noon was probably the largest held in Axickland. The Tasmania enquiry has been further adjourned till September Bth. The report of the Official Surveyor on the wreck is not yet to hand. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 27.
The first shipment of the new season's butter for the London market was despatched to-day. It consisted of 358 boxes. The season opens early, with bright prospects. WEI ,LINGTON, August 27. In his address to the Women's Political League, the Minister of Education declared himself in favour of women sitting in Parliament if their own sex desired it and the public chose to elect them. Mr Carroll informed a deputation that there was no likelihood o£ a license being granted for a hotel at Pipiriki, as it was in the prohibited area. At the annual meeting of the Institute of Accountants, Messrs Tewsley, banner, ]>rown, Scott and Gundry were elected as a Council, and it was decided to hold the next meetiug at Christchurch. Mr Brown was re-elected President, Mr A. M. Ollivier Vice-President, aud Mr Powles Secretary. A Committee was appointed to revise the Articles of Assoc.ation in the direction of allowing those who passed certain recognised examinations to be exempt from the general knowledge examination. At the annual meeting the New Zealand Da ry Fa mers' Union showed a profit of £2661, besides writing off £700 for depreciation and maintenance. The report proposes to pay milk suppliers a bonus of 5 per cent., absorbing £1045, and apply the balance to a reduction of the deficiency. An amendment was proposed to wipe off the whole of the deficiency and declare a dividend of 5 per cent., but after some discussion the original proposition was carried. The retiring Directors were reelected. DUNEDIN, August 27. At the Police Court James Read was committed for trial for stealing a gun from a hut occupied by his mate, Alexander Nichol. Read is already awaiting trial on a charge of .shooting with intent at Nichol at Warepa.
