Among a number of falls at the Amberley Steeplechase Meeting, yesterday, one was of a serious nature. James Young, a well known Riccarton horseman, sustained a broken shoulder by Contractor falling in the preliminary for the Hurdle Race. The sufferer, who was picked up suffering from concussion of the brain, regained semiconsciousness some hours later and was conveyed to Amberley, from whence he will be taken to the Christchureh Hospital to-day.

AUCKLAND, August 26. Hon. Jas. Carroll has sent a reply to the respective applications for totalisator per-mit-3 that have been made to him by the Auckland Racing nud Pakuranga Hunt Clubs. To the first named Club he has stated that he intends to carry out the dictum that no more than four permits will be allowed to any one Club. With reference to the Pakuranga Hunt Club's application, Mr Carroll saj-3 he has already refused a like request from a similar Club in another part of the colony, and that he cannot, therefore, make any distinction in favour of an Auckland Club.
