LINWOOD.

The ordinary meeting of the Linwood Borough Couucil Was held' last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Atkinson, Jos. Taylor, Ayers, Jamieson, Board, Brunt, Pearce, and John Taylor. An apology was received for the absence of Cr. Horsley. The Finance Committee reported receipts £233 14s 7d, debit balance at Bank £914 15s 6d, and recommended that accounts to the amount of £253 os Id' be passed. The Chief Postmaster wrote stating that he was unable to grant tho request for a receiving box at the corner of Traam street and the East belt. Mr J- Jarman, meat inspector, wrote stating that th* diseased cow that he reported on recently had been slaughtered and the carcase done away with ; he also stated that he had visited the butcher's shops in the and fqtmd them in a satisfactory condition. A letter from Mr Gundersen in reference to the side channel in Cashel street was received, and the Clerk was instructed to reply that the work of concreting was the first in order for next spring. The By-law Committee reported that a by-law should be prepared providing for the construction of a brick external wall in any new building to be erected within 18ft of any existing wooden building, and that a notice be published drawing attention to the bttUding by-law in reference to chimneys. The report caused a long discussion, the general opinion being that a by-law should be framed to minimise the danger of fire. It was decided to authorise the Committee to have a by-law framed in the direction mentioned in the report. Formal resolutions were passed authorising the newly-appointed -poondkeeper to impound under the Act. It was decided to ask the Drainage Board to havo all the man-holes .on. Ferry road trapped. The Clerk reported that he had commenced his work of numbering the houses in the borough. The Loan Committee asked for on extension of time till next meeting of the - , Council, as the schedule of work proposed " to be undertaken waa not quite ready. '
