SYDENHAM.
The Sydenham Council met last evening. Present—The Mayor and Crs. Murray, McMillan, Halley, Muffett, Hadfield, Beattie, Lafferty, Hirtzell, Manhire, Bell and Cutler. Leave of absence was giveto Cr. Large. The Works and Reserves Committee reported that it be be a recoißrniendation to the Council to grant the ap* plication of the Sydenham and A-ddiugtoi-Cricket Club to erect a pavilion iv the park, subjeot to certain conditions; that the Sydenham Swimming Chib be granted the use of the bath on the same conditions aa last season, except that the Club pay for the first as well as all subsequent cleanings; the Club to be responsible for the proper observance of the Council's by-laws. The report was adopted. The Finance Committee reported receipts £347 l!_s 3d. Accounts to the value of £202 7s Sid were recommended for payment. Adopted. Cr. Muffett moved—"That the motion passed by the Council in October, 189&, authorising the Mayor to call a public meeting in a central position to hear the opinions of the various candidates at the annual election of Councillors, be rescinded." Cr. Manhire seconded the motion, which was carried. Cr. Murray moved, and Cr.Hadfield seconded—" That this Council aro prepared to grant the tram extension from Devon road to Tennyson street for a period of sixteen years, the rails to be laid in the centre of the roadway, and to maintain the same as specified under the existing conditions and whatever rent and other conditions are agreed upon at the expiration of the present concession, September, 1899, will also apply to the new extension." Cr. Muffett moved as an amendment—" Tha* • the Tramway Company having refused to meet the representatives of tlie local bodies concerned in the extension of the tramway in Colombo road to discuss the terms at the proposed concessions, and having failed to give any indication to the Council of any modification of its original proposals that it is prepared to accept, the Council cannot see its way "to deal further with the question until tho Company notifies which of the suggestions 'submitted to it by the Council it is prepared to agree to, or to submit amended proposals for the consideration of the Council." The amendment was carried, tha ' voting being :—Ayes —The Mayor and Crs. McMillan, Muffptt, Beattie, Lafferty, _Drfc- '■£, -cell and Bell; noes—Crs. if array, Halley* Hadfield, Cutler and Manhire.
