PROPOSED ANTARCTIC EXPE-
DITION. London, August 20. At a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Toronto, Mr J. Scott Keltic, editor of the" Geographical Journal," strongly advocated the despatch of a thoroughly equipped expedition to the Antarctic regions. He was confident that Australasia would assist an expedition sent out by the Boyol Geographical Society. THE FRUIT SEASON. The trade anticipate that the present fruit season will be the worst experienced in England for twenty years. The apple crop is a complete failure. THE NEW SOUTH WALES CONTINGENT. A detachment of the New South Wales Mounted Bifies was entertained at a banquet in Birmingham by the local Volunteers. Colonel Lassetter said that Mr Chamberlain was engaged on a scheme for bringing the British and colonial troops still closer together. It was intended, on the earliest possible occasion, to despatch a contingent of British troops to Australia on a return visit. ROYAL VISIT TO IRELAND. In honour of his visit to Ireland, the Duke of York was sworn in as a member of the Privy Council of Ireland, and he and Lord Roberts were invested as Knights of the Most Illustrious Order of St. Patrick. COLLISION IN THE CHANNEL. A collision occurred in the English Channel between the cruiser Phaeton and the torpedo boat destroyer Thrasher, belonging to the British Squadron. The Thrasher was badly damaged, and one of her crew lost his life. AUSTRALIAN MUTTON. Since the death from ptomaine poisoning of two children at Licbfield after eating Australian mutton, one local dealer has bought thousands of carcases of Sydney frozen sheep. FUNERAL OF SIR WILLIAM JERVOIS. August 21. The funeral o! Sir William Jervois was attended by a number of representative colonials. CHTEF JUSTICE WAY. Chief Justice Way, the Australian member of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, has heard thirteen appeals and delivered one judgment. THE BOARD OF TRADE. Sir Robert Giffen retires from the position of Controller-General of the Commercial, Labour and Statistical Department of the Board of Trade, and will be succeeded by Mr A. E. Bateman, Deputy Controller-General. AN AUCKLAND MINING COMPANY. Seventy-five thousand pounds worth of shares, offered to the public in the Puriri Gold Estates Company, Hauraki, have been allotted. THE MURDERER OF CANOVAS. Madrid, August 20. Golli was executed to-day for the assassination of Senor Canovas. August 21. Golli met his death by the garotte composedly, but he scoffed at the administration of the consolations of religion. AMERICAN STOCK OF SILVER. New York, August 21. The value of the American Government stock of silver has declined sixty-six million dollars in fourteen months. ARGENTINE LOANS. Buenos Aykes, August 20. The Argentine Republic, which some time ago declared a "moratorium," has now resumed payment in full of the interest on fourteen loans. This is one year in advance of the time arranged for repayment.
