AUCKLAND, August 21. At the inquest at Waitekauri on the lad Wood, killed at the Waitekauri battery, the verdict waa that death was due to an accident through deceased's clothes being entangled round the shaft of the Hall mill. The jury added a rider that dangerous portions of machinery should be protected as far as possible, and battery hands cautioned against wearing loose clothes. At a meeting of the Tailoresses' Union it was decided to submit a new log to the employers. The Natives at Ohaki, Taupo, have quietened down, and agreed to refer their dispute to the Native Land Court.

Mr J. Sawers, for many years chief dairy expert to New Zealand, has been appointed New Zealand representative of Messrs Oetzes and Gerritsen, dairy produce importers of London. DUNEDIN, August 22.
Charges of alleged sly grog selling were heard at Balclutha on Satui'day, A constable named Hill deposed that he had been served with whiskey by J. Dunne, which was paid for by a man named Duncan out of 2s witness had given Duncan. Tbe evidence was to the effect that Hill induced him to try and get some whiskey as he was not well. Dunne told them he had not a drop in the house, and witness returned the 2i to Hill. Mr Hawkins, S.M., having re-examined Duncan, dismissed the charge, preferring to believe Duncan before Hill. A charge against J. J. Dunne was withdrawn, and four charges against McCorley were adjourned for the attendance of a witness to be brought up on warrant.
