A NARROW ESCAPE.
(press association telegram.)
AUCKLAND, May 26. A narrow escape from a collision in the harbour occurred at 5.10 last evening. The ferry steamer Victoria was going between the Railway and Queen street wharves when the steamer Waitangi was coming up the harbour close to the wharf. The light was very uncertain, and the captain of the Victoria was unable to see any great distance, but at once ordered full speed astern. Almost instantly the Waitangi passed within a few feet of the Victoria's bow. Had not the captain and engineer displayed great promptitude, the ferry steamer would have been cut in two. The Victoria had several hundred passengers. It, is understood that an enquiry will be held.
