WELLINGTON, May 26. lhe Bank of New Zealand intends to replace the present one storey wooden building at tho corner of Lambtou and Custom House quays by a four-storey brick building, which will .coat some £10,000. . The Railway Department has decided to lose no time in making a start with the construction of the bridge over the Rangitikci river to replace tho one which was almost wholly destroyed by the flood last month. A portiou of the old bridge, 120 ft long, will bo utilised, and to it will bo added a, length of 480 ft, making the total length 600 ft. The bridge will have twelve iron cylinders, which will be sunk to a depth of at least fifty or sixty fest betow thu bod of the river. Four cylinders of the old bridge are left standing, aud will be used in the nqw structure. Tho Education Board to-day discussed a scheme for the redistribution of scholarships by which the oity is allotted twelve of £15 each, and the country schools eight of £30 each. The latter are divided into three grades. Some exception wasi taken to the scab, on the ground that country schools are not getting enough, and the clisousaion was adjourned.
The latest information about tho missing man Ltiidley is that on tho Bth ho cashed a. cheque and bought some clothes; from which it is surmised that he has left the colony. A boar fish, 28ft long, has been caught and presented to tho Museum. Dr. Hector states that it is the first of the kind recorded.
At a meeting of cycle manufacturers and others, the proposal to hold a cycle show ia Christchurch in November was approved, and a Committee was formed to work with the Executive in Chriatchuroh. A resolution was carried that the Executive be recommended to drop the word "Metropolitan " from the title of tho show, with a view to holding future exhibitions in othec centres.
DUNEDIN, May 26. The criminal calendar contains ten charges against thirteen prisoners. Tha most serious charge is that of wounding with intent to commit a btirplary.
