THE NOTORIUS BUTLER.
APPLICATION FOR DELAY
OF TRIAL,
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.
Sydney, May 26. Butler's counsel applied to the full Court for the postponement of his trial till November 22nd, on the ground that publications in the newspapers had prejudiced the public mind and it was impossible to obtain an impartial, trial. The Attorney-General contended that the 'Press comments were Butler's own fault. When in Auckland he requested interviews with pressmen in order to contradict statements made in the San Francisco papers; that was the only reason the police allowed the Press, representatives to see Butler. The prisoner took the advantage to say more, but that was not the papers' fault,. Affidavits by detectives and pressmen were read confirming this. The Chief Justice said it was most lamentable that the interviews were allowed. He hoped the Press would never again 'act so. The application was refused, but the case was placed last on the list for the coming criminal sessions.
