Ascotvale soon dropped back, and at the back of the course Titoki, who had been lying third, came up and took the lead, which he maintained into the straight, where Sedgebrook dropped back, allowing Light and Return to challenge Titoki, who, however, won by a neck. Kangipai went to the front at the onset, followed by Levanter and Booties, the rest of the field stringing out. Rangipai, going at a sound pace and jumping well, led over the gorse at the bottom of the course about thirty lengths ahead of Booties and Swift, with "Claymore close behind. Glenelg came down entering the straight, where Rangipai still led, with Claymore, Booties, Swift and Levanter in this order. Over the water jump and stone wall Rangipai still showed the way from Levanter, Booties, Swift and Claymore, Bradshaw being last. In this order the recreation ground was entered. At the gorse fence entering the straight Swift baulked, but eventually got over. Rangipai led over the double, etill some lengths ahead of Booties, who was followed by Levanter, Bradahaw, and Claymore. Going round the back of the course for the last time Higgins called on Bradshaw, and he and Rangipai jumped the spar fence at the bottom of the courae together, with Claymore close up. The race now resolved itself into a match between the two leaders. Coming in the straight Bradshaw managed to clear the hencoop a little ahead of Kangipai, and won a fine race by about three lengths, Claymore being third, the others pulling up. Time, 6min 27sec. Dividend, £12 15s. FIRST HUNTERS'STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, of 50 nova ; second 10 soys from the stake. About three miles. 167. Mr P. Watton's b g Fleetwood, by Wolf—*>ay Dawn mare, list .. .. Cadet soon took command, but at the back of the course came to grief. Convict led into the straight, and was closely followed by Fleetwood ; Elk, Tell Tale, Dick and Sir Athol being a good way behind, with Cadet, who had been re-mounted, still further away. Convict maintained the lead over water jump and stone wall and through the recreation ground into the straight. Over the double opposite the grand stand Convict was closely followed by Dick. At the back of the course Fleetwood asserted himself, and overtook Convict, and got over the fence at the bottom of the course. At the honcoop jump Fleetwood led by half a length, and Dick and Tell Tale coming up, Convict fell to pieces, allowing Fleetwood to win, with Dick and Tell Tale second and third. Time, 6min47sec. Dividend, £3 9s. FIEBT HANDICAP HURDLE RACE, of 80 sore; second 10 soys from the stake. About two miles. 340. Mr F. Whakau's b g Tangaroa, aged, lOst 91b (Better) 3 263, Troubadour also started. Tangaroa and Dummy assumed the lead, being closely followed by Troubadour. Passing the stand the order was Tangaroa, Dummy and Swift, Troubadour having come down at the hurdle entering the straight. At the back of the course Swift supplanted Tangaroa and led until entering the straight, when Dummy came with a wet sail and headed Swift, and won by about a neck, Tangaroa being third. Time, 4min 13isec. Dividend, £2 14s. FIRST HACK FLAT, of 40 soys; second 10 sove from the stake. One mile and a distance. 82. Mr W. Locariua shot ahead at the start, but at the half-mile poet Rodara, Emerald and Fireworks came up. At the straight Fireworks led, Locarius having shot her bolt. The race up the straight was between Fireworks, Emerald and Mainboom, and finished in that order, Rodara and Locarius being fourth and fifth. Time, 2min6eec. Dividend, £9 15s. SUBURBAN STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, of 60 8OVB; second 10 soys from the stake. Two miles and a half. 179. Mr O. Archibald's bg Levanter, by Oaptivator—Steel All, aged, 128t .. (Rae) 1 Mrs Chas. Mackie's b g Claymore, aged, 9st 101b (G.Laing) 2 Mr J. P. Belcher's br g Fencer, 5 yrs, 9et 7)b (tfitehel) 3 Tokanui, 9st 101b (Walls), also started. Claymore and Levanter got away together, the former soon getting a lead, Fencer and Tokanui being many lengths behind. This order was kept till coming into the straight, when both Claymore and Levanter ran off the course, missing the hencoop fence. Levanter's rider was the first to see the error, and pulled up, went back, and negotiated the jump and came home an easy winner by half a dozen lengths from Claymore. Fencer finished, but was about haU-a-mile behind. Tokanui threw his rider at the first fence, but though remounted, was never in it. Time, 6min. Dividend, £3 2s. The amount put through the machine was £4378 for six races as against £4875 last year, when there were seven races.
