AMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Amuri County Council was held at Culverden on April 3rd. Present—Messrs D. Rutherford (Chairman),. D. D. Macfarlane, W. Acton-Adams, J. H. Davison, A. Macfarlane and W. Thomson.

Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Jones owing to illness. The Chairman's report, was read as follows :—Since last meeting the following correspondence has been received—From Mr R. A. Forrester, drawing the Council's attention to the state of the lower crossing of the Pahau River on the St. LeonardsHurunui road. From Mr A. Moore, stating that he was. surprised to hear that the Council was not aware that the road between the Achray gate and Mr Jones's bouudary was closed up, and further stating that there are five fences across this road in a little more than half a mile. From the Ashburton County Engineer,, giving a description of a machine for constructing and cleaning out water-races. The labour gang has been employed during the month putting in earthenware drain pipes in place of the old wooden culverts on the top of Jollies Pass, improving the main road between Jollies Pass Hotel and the Rogerson, shingling a piece of the Hot Springs-Jack's Pass road, improving the cutting leading into the Hanmer River and repairing the Waiau-Kaikbura road.

The receipts for the month are, dog tax £17 17s 6d, first instalment of grant for Kaikoura road £30, rent of reserve (Devine) £2 10s, Mr McArthnr's share of cost of making Upper Clarence road £6 2s 6d, temporary license for Culverden Hotel £2, and conditional license for Amberley sports ss. The credit balance of the general account is £630 3s 10s, of the water race maintenance account £6 4s 7d aijd interest account £69 193 9d. The Overseer was instructed to repair the crossing of the Pahau river, complained of by Mr Forrester, when the gang are working in that locality. It was decided that the Chairman and Mr Davis arrange to meet Mr Moore at Rotherham and go over the road referred to by him.

Mr D. Ruthbrpord moved, in accordance with notice of motion, given at last meeting—" That a general rate of one halfpenny in the £ be made and levied on all the rateable property in the Amuri County for a period of one year ending 31st March, 1898, such rate to become due and payable in one sum, at the Council office, Culverden, on the 20th Aprilj 1897." Seconded by Mr Davison and carried. j After passing the accounts the Council adjourned.
