LINWOOD.
The annual statutory meeting of the Linwood Borough Council and the installation of Mayor was held last evening. There were present —The Mayor-elect (Mr A. Marshall) and Crs. Ayers, Jos. Taylor, Jameson, J. C. Atkinson, J. R. Brunt and John Taylor.
The Mayor-emot thanked the Councillors for their courtesy and assistance during his past year of office, which had been a very pleasant one. They, had not had any large works to carry out, the only ones of importance being the channelling Of certain streets and the widening of a portion of the Stanmore road. These were very necessary works, and he was sorry that the funds would, not permit of their being pushed on at a faster rate. Some thought that the Council should pay more attention to maintenance, but be considered that the Council could spend its money in no better way than upon permanent works such as he had mentioned. The Mayor-elect then made the usual statutory declaration. Cr. Brunt said the fact of the unopposed re-election of Mr Marshall as Mayor for a second term showed that his services had been appreciated during the .past year. The work of the Council had been carried on in a harmonious manner, as all the Councillors were unanimous in endeavouring to do what Was best for the borough. He would like to see a recreation ground secured, the Tuam street drain improved, and a system Of flushing the side channels carried out. Crs. Jos. Taylor and Jameson also congratulated his Worship upon assuming office for a second term. His Worship thanked the Councillors for their; expressions of goodwill, and said that any other works besides those now carried out-could only be undertaken by means of a loan. , Cr. Atkinson moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Town Clerk for the efficient way in which he had discharged his duties during the year, and paid a high tribute to Mr Smith's ability. _~^_ Cr.-Avers seconded the linotion, which was carried unanimously, aud the Council adjourned till January 11th.
