The water picnic arranged for last night by the Entertainment Committee in connection with the Firo Brigade* Demonstration was a complete success. The night was calm and atill, though frosty, and the effect of the coloured fires in •-he procession of boats was excellent. The banks were lined with spectators, and round the C.R.C. sheds, and on the aides of the river, there were crowds of people. The trip was from the Chester street Station to the lawn of the C.R.C. Here Mr Stokes had erected a set piece, and also a number of other very excellent fireworks. The visitors were greatly impressed with this display of local industry, and the fireworks were certainly well worthy of the praise. After the fireworks display refreshments were served to the visitors. The members of the C.R.C. very kindly life op the shede and rooms of the Club, and the visitors were conducted over tbe building and inspected the boate, &c. The Garrison Band played daring the evening, and altogether the affair was a great success. The competition will be continued at Lancaster Park to-day, when the programme will be completed. The first event will start at 9 a.m. In the .evening the banquet and presentation of prizes will take place at the Art Gallery, when his Worship the Mayor will preside and distribute the prizea won at the competition.
