BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held at 11 a.m. yesterday, when there were present Messrs R. Weatenra (Chairman), A. Saunders, T. W. Adams, J. Rennie, H. W. Perymau, J. W. Sawle, J. Mannings and Hon. W. Montgomery. An apology was received for the absence of Mr R. Meredith. The Chairman reported that Messrs H. W. Peryman, T. W. Adams, and T. 8. Weston had been elected members of the Board. /The Normal School Committee reported, with .reference to an application from Mr Smith, of Fernside, to enter the Normal School for . training, that it could not recommend the Board to allow applicants who had not been pupil teaohers to enter the school, but was of opinion that the question of allowing a limited number of those who had passed through a pnpil teacher course in other eduoational districts to enter the practising department might be considered. It waa decided to recommend the Board to allow Miss Rosa Corsbie to enter the Normal School at half the remuneration ordinarily received by students. A report was received from the Principal upon the arrangements made at the commencement of the year, and his suggestions were approved. Permission was given to have the names of boys who had gained scholarships or other distinctions painted on a shield to be hung in the boys' department. The report was adopted. The Buildings Committee report dealt with the applications for repairs, &0., that had been received, and sanctioned or otherwise, and stated that the following tenders had been accepted—New Brighton, additions, G. Petrie, £170; Rabbit Island, new school, R. Forbes, £234 10s, and fencing 23a per chain; Hornby, teaoher'e house, J. Hammett, £260; Rolleston, J. Hammett, £262; Woolston, repairs, J. Hammett, £30.

The report was adopted. . The Appointments Committee recommended the following appointments :— Maokenzie, Miss Claudia Watson, mistress ; Ashburton, Miss A. G. Banks, mistress ; Riooarton, Ellen Grogan ; Hempstead, Kate Porter; Addington, Mary Turnbull and Ethel Bowden all as pupil tsaohers. The resignation of Mr Dalgleisb, assistant master, Sydenham, was received and accepted,, and it was resolved to promote Messrs Hall and Mollroy, as recommended by the Sohool Committee, if approved by the head master. The resignation of Mr Speight, Riverside, was accepted, and it was resolved to advertise for a successor.

The report was adopted. A letter was read from the Canterbury Branch of the Navy League, inviting the cooperation of the Board in the objects the League had in view. The letter was received. The Hon. W. Montgomery moved, and Mr Pkryman seconded, and it was agreed to :—" That a Conference of 'the Chairmen and headmasters of the larger schools of the district with the Board be held to consider the best means of introducing manual and technical labour in the schools."

The draft of the annual report of the Chairman was considered and passed, and the Board after going into Committee adjourned.

The election for the South Canterbury Board of Education resulted in the return of Messrs W. B. Howell, J. Salmondand P. Keddie. The old members defeated were the Rev. J. White and Mr Graham. Fifty, one Committees voted. '
