CITY COUNCIL.

Monday, March 9. The Council met at 7.30 p. m. Prase nt— His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Widdowaon, Gray, Woods, Andrews, Sand- ! etein, Appleby, Kincaid, Soreosen, Connal, Prudhoe, Payiing and Dr. Stewart. Apologies were received for tho abeence of Crs. Samuels and Bunting. The statement of accounts for the fortn'ght showed :—Receipts—General account, £370 183 10d; Cemetery, £27 12s 6d: Suspense, £10 9s 9d; Interest, £5 Us 6d. Expenditure—General account, £474 9a 2d; Cemetery, £14 16s 8d ; Suspense, £3 ; Interest, £300; Bank overdraft, £319117s Id. The Mαyob mentioned that it had been brought under his notice that in the Wei* lington and Auckland districts application had been made to the Government to make regulations with regard to dairies. Such regulations had been made, and appeared to so it the recommendations of the Sanitary Committee of this Council. A unanimous vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Menlove for hie generous gift of ■wans. The City Surveyor, among other things, reported that he had. received instructions from the Works Committee to lay an asphalt footpath round the east side of Cathedral square by the carriers' stand. The report was adopted. The Finance and Works Committee recommended the Council to affirm the desirability of acquiring the Hereford street mill, but considered the price too high. The report was adopted. The Reserves Committee reported having paid their annual visit to the reserves on Thursday last. They recommended the calling of tenders for the lease for five years of the Bottle Lake reserve. The report was adopted. / Dr. Stewart moved the adoption of the Sanitary Committee's report presented at the previous meeting. Cr. Andrews seconded the motion, which was carried. Cr. Widdowson obtained leave for the By-Law Committee to introduce by-laws relating to milk and tramways. On the motion of Cr. Gray it was decided to write to t&e proper authorities concerning smells wid to arise from piggeries near the cemetery. Cγ. Kixcaid, referring to the typhoid fever cases, said that it was not to be wondered at considering' the state of many of the channels. He moved—" That the Council's officers be instructed to request all householders to connect with the main sewer, and any householder failing to do so and using the side channel in which to empty house slops be proceeded against forthwith." Cγ. Paylixo seconded the motion. The Mayor stated that only half the mileage of the city was served by sewers. The motion was ultimately withdrawn. After dealing with license* the Council adjourned.
