Fourth Day. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copynght MELBOU RNE, March 7. The buu was very powerful iv the earlier portion of the afternoon, but a chaage took place after the second race. The attendance was quite equal to that of the previous days. Hova executed a phenomenal run in the Allaged Stakes when Newhaven appeared to have the race at his mercy, and covered the last six furlongs in lmin lssec. Mr W. R. Wilson's Cyduus displayed beautiful action in the Unplaced Two-year-old Stakes, swinging home with long sweeping strides. Owing to her burly condition, Cydnus ran comparatively unbacked, giving the majority of the pencillers a stinner. In the Steeplechase, horses began failing one after another until only Quicklight and Grandwing were left in, but at ipe third fence from home the former also came to grief. Tartutfe sustained such severe injuties that he had to be destroyed. The extra penalty told on Quiver in the Loch Piate, the last mile and a half of which was covered in 2min 36£ sec, and the last six furlongs in lmin 16f sec. Following are the results :—

Mr Cook's colt led iuto the straight, half way up which Newhaven ran to the front, looking an easy winner until a furlong from the pos", when Hayes brought Hova up with a marvellous rutin, and settling Newhaven ia a dozen yards, won cleverly by a length, Tire three lengths away third. The colours of Cohort, Ena, and Orpheline were first to show in front, but at the tan crossing the stable companious Interlude and Barlej'corn held command with Spindrift coming fast, and the latter led into the course proper from Interlude, after whom came Ena and Silverlocks. The positions were much the same to the half distance, where Cydnus swept up on the outside and won easily by three-quarters of a length, half a length between second and third, then came Interlude, Miss Oarbine, Crease, and Cohort, with Orpheliue last. Up the river side Trentside led from Lord Richmond, Music and Preston, while Warpaint was last. As the field approached the home turn the latter began to move up, and at the turn was with the leaders. Just inside the distance Warpaint had wrested the lead from Chesterman, and here The Enchanter, who had got into a bad position rounding into the straight, made a great effort to get up, and though he passed Chesterman could not reach Warpaint, who won by a short head, Chesterman three lengths away, Preston fourth, Lord Richmond fifth, Miraculum sixth, Music last. Time, 2miu 4 Osec. The last six furlongs was run in lmin 17|sec. SECOND STEEPLECHASE, a handicap sweepstakes of 5 soys each, with 300 added; second 50 and third 25 soys out of the stake. On settling down Auraria took up the running' from Quiver and Hova, and held the lead until passing the mile post, where Quiver assumed command, and went on naif a length in advance of Hova. Quiver maintained her advantage to the entrance to the straight, but when fairly in the home stretch a desperate struggle ensued, Hova forging past in the last half-furlong, and winning by three-quarters oi a length, O'Trigger seven lengths away, and Auraria a bad last. Homespun took command as they entered the straight, winning cleverly by three-quarters of a length ; the same distance between second and third ; then came Disfigured, Idolator, Common, with Eridaforde last.
