RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

WEDNESDAY. The best gallop of the morning was that executed by Skirmisher and Ambueh, the horse covering a mile and a-quarter, having the filly with him for close on a mile. Both, who ran under a pull, went in a taking style,, and finished well. Most of the others out before breakfast did steady exercise, a few being spurted. Pitch and Toss, who arrived from Dunedin the previous night, put in an appearance after breakfast, and upas given easy pace work. She looks somewhat light. Jlowai who is looking well came home the last part of a round fast. Most of the Yaldhurst team were on the ground. Bloodshot was sent for strong work By himself, being followed by Bellicent at similar exercise. Firefly moving in taking Btyle galloped over a few furlongs, and New Forest pulled over a mile and a half stretching himself out in parts. Culverin, who is on the light side, was restricted to half pace work. A number of horses were practised starting at the machine both before and after breakfast. Marino, whose withdrawal from Saturday's engagements hae been announced, is a trifle sore, and his stable companion, Silver Spec, has evidently not been benefited by the Wellington trip, and will not be seen at her best this week. Barmby and Bialey are both looking well and the younger colt in particular has been moving in taking style. Padlock may be started in the Middle Park Plate; he has done nothing, however, to make it supposed he can be at all dangerous. , The summer gathering of the Canterbury Jockey Club on Saturday promises to produoe some very interesting raoing. The composition of the field for the chief handicap will surely be such that the race will be much harder to win than it was on the last anniversary, when Lady Zetland had nothing to trouble her. That popular favourite again figures in the list of competitors, and her chance is highly thought of. She may win again, but to do so she will have to be quite herself. A stable companion of Lady Zetland's in Maximus will have numerous supporters should he be selected to do battle. Other aspirants for the honours of the race are also descendants of the defunct Maxim. These are the Yald-hurat-trained Bellicent and Black and Red, formerly an inmate of the same stable. These, with Skirmisher and one or two others added, should make the contest for the Midsummer Handicap something worth witnessing. The Dunedin fiUy Belle Clair is gaining friends for the Middle Park Plato, and, with Ike and Pitch and Toss, ■bould make a good fight to take the prize over the Otago border. Acceptances for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Hummer Meeting, taking place on Saturday, close to-night. Entries for the Interval Stakes also close to-night. A trotting match between Mr Pat. Reid's Black Been and Mr Thyne't bay mare took place at Waimate on Tuesday, and created considerable excitement. The distance was about three miles, from McNainara's corner to the railway crossing in High street. Mr R. DaUey acted as starter. Mr Tbyne'e mare

led from start to finish, and woo. in a hollow fashioD. Marino has been scratched for all engagements at the C.J. C. Summer Meeting.
