Queen's Cadets.—This corps will hold their usual weekly parade this evening, at seven o'clock, when a epeoial announcement will be made. Salvation Army.—The farewell meetings to Sufl-Captaiu Wilson have been largely attended. The farewell tea and final meeting takes pkoe to-night at the (Sydenham Barracks. Pulpit Exchange.—The Rev. H. C. M. Watson exchangee with the Rev. A. Smith, of Portland, Victoria, for six months. Ho leaves on Friday. Mrs Wataon and part of the family follow about three weeks later. Statutory Half-holiday.—A meeting of delegates from the variov.? Borough Councils and the City Council wni be held this evening at the City Council Chambers, to consider the fixing of tho date of the statutory half-holiday. Pkesbntatiox.—On Monday a presentation was made by the legal profession to Mr J. M. Batham, District Land Registrar, who is about to be removed to Wellington. Mr Slater made the presentation, aud re* ferred to the friendly relations that had existed between the profession and Mr Batham during the fourteen years he had been in Ohristchureb. Mr Batham suitably responded. Desektkd Tβam Cars —Aβ one of the trams was coming from ISumner last night three of the cars became detached midway between the Shag Rock and the Heathcoto bridge, and the engine with the two remaining cars had goue about a quarter of a mile beforo the occurrence was discovered. Geraldinb Farmers' Club. — The monthly meeting of the Gori»ldine Fawners' Club took.-place on Mr M. C. Orbell (President) read an interesting paper on the sowing of grasses and the mortality of lambs. The paper was freely discussed. The Club received word from the Farmers' Co-operative Association that they could continue the use of their rooms, and it was decided in future to meet bi-monlhly instead ot monthly. Open Air Music. —The Garrison Band played a very good selection of music in the Rotunda last night. To-morrow evening the Engineers' Band will play programme of music in tho Rotunda, commencing at 7.45 p.m. :—March, "The Red Rover ;" waltz, " Te Koraha ;" euphonium solo, " Anchored ;'* selection, *' Humours of Donnybrook;" mazurka, "Belle ot Sydney;" fantasia, " Beethoven;" much. " The Southern Cross ;" " God Save tho Queen." New Zealand Workers' Uniox.—With a view of organising the whole of tho station hands of this colony, the General Secretary of the New Zealand Workers' Union has been instructed to compile a directory containing the various sheep stations from Auckland to the Bluffy | Theatrical.—Mr Keating arrived yesterday to make arrangements for Mr Bland Holt's return sfiason, which opens on Tuesday next at the Theatre Royal, for twelve nighta. The pieces to bo produced will be new to Christchurch playgoers, including " Saved | from the Sea" and " The Fatal Card." An advertisement announcing that the season w>ll open with "Saved from the Sea" uppears on page 3 of this issue. Railway Amatkuh Swimming Club.— A Committee meeting of this Club was held last evening, when arrangements were made for holdiug the Club'a 48yds (three lengths) Handicap Race on the sth of February. Entries close with the Secretary on Saturday. More Heatrd Coal. —Yesterday it was discovered that a cargo of coal on board the steamer Rosamond, which vessel ha 3 been laid up in Lyttelton for some weeks, bad become heated. Steps were at once taken to discharge the coal into hulks, aud today a survey will be made to ascertain the extent to which the coal is affected. Tennis Match. —A tennis match was played on Saturday afternoon between teams representing the Papauui and St, Albans Clubs, and-resulted in a win for Papauui by 54 games to 43. The following were the games :—Ladies' Single—Miss Bishop (Papauni) 9, Miss Speight (St. Albans) 5. Ladies' Doubles, Misses Bishop and Robinson (Papanui) 9, Misses Speignt and Koaewarne (St. Albans) 8. Combined — Miss Robinson and Mr C. Ferguson (Fapanui) 9, Miss L. Rosewarne and Mr G. The match was a moat enjoyable one and was fought out with the keenest spirit. Funeral.—The funeral of the late Mr William O'Shaughnessy took place yester- | day. In the morning a requiem mass was said by the Very Rev. Father Cummings at the Pro-Cathedral, Barbadoes street, whence the body was conveyed in the afternoon to the Linwood Cemetery. The deceased had i been, a3 Secretary or President, connected j for eight years with the H.A.C-B. Society, and was also a member of the Oddfellows' Society. His funeral was attended by about fifty members of the former and a tair number of the latter Society, besides numerous private friends. The bearers and pall bearerawere—Bros. P. Burke, President; G. J. Sellars, P.D.P.; James Nelson, P.D.; W. andD. Steinmitz, P.P. (ofjthe H.A.C.B. Society), and C. Hill, N.G., and P.G.s Keunealy, P. Steinmitz and J. Calder (of the Oddfellows). After the body had been committed to the grave, the Rev, Father Cuniinings delivered a short panegyric on the deceased. Mr O'Shaughnessy died on Saturday after a very short illness. The esteem in which he was held was shown by the Hibernians passing on Monday night, before adjourning their nenal meeting, resolutions of sympathy and condolence with his bereaved parents, widow and six orphans. The District Board of Hibernians at Auckland also sent a letter of condolence and regret at the death of so deserving a member and able an officer.

Hospital Fete—The fete in aid of the Destitute Patients' Fund will take place in the Hospital grounds on Thursday, February 6th, at 2 p.m. The programme includes a baby show, Punch and Judy, Japanese and skirt dancing, Richardson's dhow and a host of otLer attractions. Any ono taking a ticket for the baby show will be entitled to four votes. Popular Cokoert.—A popular concert will be given in the Papanui Town Hall tomorrow evening, vrhen the various items will be contributed by Mra Weslraacott, Mrs Matsou, Misses Freda Maradea, Matsou, and Graham, Messrs Hugh Reeves, Day, Lovell. Raphael, Newman, Ballantyne, and L. S. Watson. The concert will take place at 8 p.m., and a special tram has been arranged for. Forestry.—The regular meeting of Court Star of Kelfast. Wottcn with a handsome silverplated inkstand, suitably engraved, for past services as Secretary.—The usual monthly meeting of Court Queen of Canterbury (Ladies' Court), No. 7756, A.0.F., was held ou Monday evening, in th 9 Foresters' Hall. There was a large attendance of the lady members and visitors. Ail the officers wero present, and the Treasurer, Sister Alachin, tendered her resignation owing to her departure for the North Island. The resignatiou was accepted with regret. Sister Stevens agreed to c*rry on the duties of Treasurer until next meeting, when the election of officers will take place. It was decided to hold an anniversary social to commemorate the formation of the Ladies' Court, and to invite the Sister Court Victoria, Kaiapoj, to be present. It was annouuce.l that Court Star of Canterbury, No. 2309, had finally decided the question of providing a piano for the use of persons hiring the hall. Two candidates were initiated. Pkesokal.—Mr J. E. Bannister, an old pupil at the Wanganui Collegiate School, and formerly a student of Canterbury College, has been appointed to a position in the Christ's College Grammar School. Siioi'3 Closing at Rangiora.—ln reply to the letter of the Rmgiora Borougti Couacil, forwarding petitions withdrawing names from a petitiou previously seat for closing on Saturdays at 9 p.m., and a petition protesting against same, the Labour Department has replied that, as the first petition was not gazetted, no action would be taken till a clear three-fifths' majority wished to close on Saturday. The department explained it had no wish to cause heartburning among the citizans of any borough in the enforcement of a measure intended for their nonveuienco. Obituary.—lt ie with reqrefc we record the death of Mr Samuel Hey wood, of Banner Downs, Feruside, near Raueiora, which took place in Christchurch on jilonday afternoon. He was connected with a family of London bankers, and came to the colony in the fifties, settling at Fernside about 1850. He was for a time a member of the Mandeville Road Board, for niauy years a Justice of the Peace, and at the time of his decease was a member of the Waimakariri-Ashley Water Supply Board. Hβ wa9 churchwarden and a lay reader to the Church of England at Fernaide, and through his efforts the church there was erected. It is understood the interment of his remains will be made in the Rangiora cemetery.
