SWIMMING,
RICHMOND CLUB.
The Richmond Amateur Swimming Club held its annual exhibition sports on Saturday afternoon, when the w.ather was fine, ihe attendance large, and the events got off with promptitude by tbe officials. The Stanmore Band was present, and contributed music during the course of the proceedings, but is .questionable whether a brass baud let it play never so well, is a desirable acquisition to such a gathering as that of Saturday. The spectators had much to amuse them. The programme opened with spring board diviug aud a procession, followed by tub races, scratch races, a young ladies' race in which Misse* O. Kent, L. Bassett, E. Ayere, D. Bassett, and E. Sorensen acquitted themselves well, a blindfold pick-a-back race, aud a greasy pole display. In addition to this Professor Pannell gave an excellent exhibition of various feats, in several of which he was assisted by some of his pupils, with one of whom he did the "cartwheel" revolution, which was very interesting. Messrs Harker and Buttertield also did some fancy work iv the water. In the competitive events, the 100 yds Championship of Canterbury was won by W. J. Stratton, of the Christchurch Club, iv 73 l-sth sec, which beats the lime of Leo when he was here by 3-5.1 iof a sec. Appended are the results— 100 Yards Championship of Canterbury ; first and second priz*s gold medals—W. J. Strattou, C.A.S.C, 1; H. Bullivant and T. Wauchop, E/J.A.S.C, dead heat, 2; A. B. Pascoe, and W. Bassett) by two goals to nothing. The Sydenham team showed the best combination, and in the first spell Keut aud Bell each scored a goal.
