THE SURPLUS. (press association telegram,) WELLINGTON, May JO. According to figures published by the Times this morning, purporting to ba from to-day's Gazette which, however, has not been issued to the public, the revenue {«- the March quarter waa aa follow*;-. Customs, £435,215; stamps, -3165,765*,. post and telegraph, £37,803 ; land tax' £3043; income tax, £83.443; beer duty £17,810; railways, £373,494 ; registration &c, £15,236; marine, £68065 trmoel! laneous, £33,773; territorial, £124,690* total, £1,236,154. The expenditure for tlia same quarter waa :—Permanent appropriation, £157,833 ; annual appropriations £672,349; transferred to Public Works Fund, £200.000 ; total, £1,021,182.
Deduating the debit balancu at December 31st of £34,173 and adding £2220 received on Cheviot account, a surplus for tho year of £180,019 is arrived at.
