OTHER DEPUTATIONS.

A deputation, including Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, Professor Bickerton, the Rev. W. Birch, and others, waited upon the Premier on Saturday to put before him the views of a Conference recently held regarding the detention of vagrants found to be suffering from disease at a criminal Lock Hospital. Mr Hornsby explained the matter, and suggested an amendment to the Police Offences Act making provision for dealing with such cases. On Saturday evening a deputation, consisting of Mr H. B. Kirk, Mr J. L. Scott, Mr Robert Allan, and Mr J. A. Frostick, who were accompanied by Mr John Joyce, Mr Russell, and Mr Collins, M.H.R.'s. waited upon the Premier, and asked for a grant in aid from the Government to the extent of £1000, towards the proposed Industrial Exhibition. The deputation laid stress on the growing interest evinced by the public on the question of local manufactures, and the good done by exhibitions, and reminded the Premier that many thousands had been spent by tbe Government both in Wellington and Dunedin on exhibitions, and so far not a penny in Canterbury. Mr Seddon at once expressed his personal sympathy with the scheme, aud requested a formal application, with full particulars, should beseut to him, when he would bring it before the Cabinet.
