(Chairman), and Messrs Barnett, Rennie, Harris, Bradley, Daly, Coop, Joblin, and Perm. The police reported unfavourably of the Criterion Hotel, Akaroa, Madeira Hotel, Akaroa, and Forsyth Arms Hotel, Little River. The reports on the remaining eleven hotels in the district were satisfactory. Renewals of licenses were granted to John Mackenzie, Eilesmere Arms ; H, Constable, Ocean View Hotel, Governor's Bay ; Robert Bayley, Wackerlie's Hotel, Akaroa ; Charles Wilson, Somerset Hotel, Dαvauchelle's; Horace Pick, Southbridge Hotel; M. Hill, Royal Hotel, Southbridge; A. Buller, Railway Hotel, Doyleston. New licenses were granted to T. Graves, Bruce Hotel, Akaroa; Patrick Gilmore, Springston Hotel. Renewals of accommodation licenses were granted to H. Manson, W neatsheaf Hotel, Teddington, and Robert Paton, Hilltop Hotel, Barry's Bay. The renewals of licenses for the other three hotels were held over for further consideration, and the Committee adjourned till June 26th. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) GISBORNE, June 7. At the Waiapu Licensing Bench annual meeting to-day all the applications for renewals were granted, but one application for a new license to an old house at Wairengaakuri and one for an old house at Kawakawa were adjourned till next quarterly meeting. In these cases the licences lapsed through an informality last year, and the Bench held they had no power to grant fresh licenses. NELSON, June 7. All the licenses were renewed yesterday with the exception of the application for a transfer of the Exchange Hotel to Samuel Hansen, which was deferred until the 4th *of July, to which date the Committee adjourned. The objection was that undesirable characters frequent the house. WELLINGTON, June 7. The business at the annual meeting of the City Licensing Committee was transacted in eighteen minutes. All the renewals and transfers were granted without opposition, although in two cases the licensees were cautioned for permitting Sunday trading and drinking alter hours. The closing time was fixed at eleven o'clock, and permission wae given to extinguish the street lights at that hour. The Committee expressed the opinion that, with one or two exceptions, the houses had been fairly well conducted, and in some instances particularly well, and the Committee was satisfied that the police were doing their duty. TIMARU, June 7. All the licenses were granted, with an extension of the hour of closing to 11 p.m. The Rev. W. Gillies, a prohibitionist member of the Committee, objected to the renewal of licenses to houses having private bars, and argued that only public bars, as defined by the Act, are legal. He also opposed the extension of hours. He was defeated by 5 to 2 on both points.
