ASHBURTON.

A meeting of the Ashburton Committe. was held yesterday, when there was a full attendance of members. In the absence of the Stipendiary Magistrate, Mr Donald Williamson was elected Chairman. A deputation from the County Stock and Saleyards Company waited on the Committee and requested the granting of a conditional license for the refreshment room ab the Ashburton Yards on sale day, as at Tin* wald. After hearing the several speakers on behalf of the request, the Committee decided not to grant it. The following renewals of licenses were granted :—Butler's Hotel, Miss T. Butler; Chertsey Hotel, Campbell; Royal Hotel, H. Davis; Central Hotel, J. Dove ; Ashburton Hotel, P. Devane; Rakaia Hotel, W. Halliday; Commercial Hotel, J. Henry; Somerset Hotel, W. James ; Railway Hotel, Rakaia, P. Millar ; Methven Hotel, J. Nee ; Canterbury Hotel, Methven, W. Rouse ; Leeston Hotel, W. bpring. A petition, Bigned by sixty persons, was presented in favour of granting an eleven o'clock license for the Central Hotel, but the Committee declined to grant it. An application on behalf ot the hotel keepers to extinguish lamps in front of their respective houses was refused.

The Licensing Committee at Waikato unanimously refused to renew the license of the Royal Hotel, Hamilton, Cambridge, on the ground that they had no jurisdiction, there really being no application before them to consider. The licensee had posted a notice on his door, but had not given any notice to the clerk. NELSON, June 6. At the City Licensing Court all the applications but one were granted, and in connection with that case the Committee adjourned for a month to allow of _ transfer.
