LICENSING COMMITTEES.

LYTTELTON. The annual meeting of this Committee Avas neld at noon yesterday. Present—Commissioners Willis (in the chair), Mitchell, Giffoid, Dale, Douglas and Kitson. Renewals were granted for the Lyttelton Hotel, Mary O'Brien ; Albion, J. C. Hickson ; British, R. Richardson; Sumner, A. H. Fisher; Canterbury, C. Brown ; Saxon, F. Beverley ; Mitre, T. A. W. Parsons ; Empire, J. Gordon ; Heatheote Valley, M. Mason ; Cave Rock, Sumner, M. A. Rule: Marine, (J. R. Morton; Royal, R. Grantham. Tho police pointed out that the licensee of this hotel had been convicted of allowing gambling. The Committee considered euffi.ient punishment had been meted out. Wholesale licenses were granted to H. Hawkins and Forbes and Co. An application for a packet license was made for the steamer Jane Douglas. Sergeant Rutledge stated that the captain of the steamer had been convicted on July sth, 1894, of selling liquor at unauthorised places, and again on May 2nd, 1895, had been convicted on a similar charge. The steward of tho steamer had also been convicted on the same day on a similar charge. A further charge was also pending against the A'essel. On an application for a packet license for tho steamer John Anderson being made Sergeant Rutledge stated that the captain of the vessel had been convicted on May 2nd of selling liquor in unauthorised places. The Bench informed Sergeant Rutledge that he had no right to bring before the Committee evidence of cases that were still sub judice. The applications for packet licenses would be adjourned till the 19th inst., when the Stipendiary Magistrate would be present. The Committee decided that the lights might be put out at the hour of closing, 11 p.m., on week days, and 10 p.m. on Sunday. Sergeant Rutledge pointed out that tbe street lights were put out at midnight, and the town would then be in total darkness. The Committee said it was the duty of the Borough Council to light the town, and if they could not afford to do so they (the Committee) did not see why the publicans should be taxed for the purpose. This concluded the business, and the Committee adjourned.
