FIRES.

IN SYDENHAM.

About twenty minutes to one o'olook this morning a young man, named J. Small, observed fire in a building in Colombo road, Sydenham, occupied by Mc J. Dunham, bootmaker, and Mr J. Nixon, jun., tailor. He ab once ran to the indicator opposite the Prince of Wales Hotel, and gave the alarm. The Lichfield street chemical engine reached the scene just as the flames were breaking through the roof. As the fire had obtained a good hold over the shop next door, occupied bf Geo. Andrews, pork butcher, and several other shops were in danger, Mr Kennedy, the Insurance Association's watchman, ordered the use of the Lichfield street steamer, which had stopped at the Belt. The fire was kept in check by the chemical until water was obtained from the Sydenham Baths, when soon all danger of its spreading was over. The fire seems to have started at the rear of the f building used by Mr Dunham as a workshop. Both shops were completely gutted. The property is owned by Mr J. Morgan. Mr Nixon's stock was uninsured, but whether Messrs Dunham and Morgan were insured or not could not be ascertained this morning.
