THE TEPID SWIMMING BATH.

At the City Council meeting on Monday sight, the City Surveyor presented plans and estimates, prepared by Mr T. Cane and himself, of a tepid swimming bath, the movement for the construction of which has recently been renewed. The plans and estimates have been carefully prepared, and show that the cost of a bath such as is desired would be considerably over £3000, without allowing for the ground; and maintenance would be £tioo a year. The Council did not decide to proceed with the work. The site suggested is the Market place, near the weighbridge. The swimming bath would be 75ft x 36ft; shallow end, 3ft 6 in; deep end, 7ft; mean depth, sft 3in. and the quantity of water to be heated would be 85,000 gallons. The bath would be surrounded by a concrete platform and thirty-five dressing rooms, fitted with doors, and well lighted. There would be three hot bath rooms for ladies and three for men, a separate entrance for ladies, an office, ladies' and gentlemen's waiting rooms, and a club room 23ft x 14ft. The boiler room would be 24ft by 16ft 6in. Publio accommodation for some 300 people would be provided by a gallery running along the two sides; the oath, would be covered in with a roof of glass and iron, which at the apex would be 29ft above the water. The exterior presents a compact appearance, with walls of brick relieved with cement facings, and containing plenty of windows for lighting purposes. The front entrance would be from Victoria street. Every attention has been paid to drainage, lighting, fittings, &c, and should the bath be erected in accordance with the plans it would for its size be convenient and commodious. The estimated cost is more than the Swimming Clubs' delegates anticipated would be required for the purpose, and may possibly prove a stumbling block. . Whatever further steps are to be taken, however, will not be known until the plans have been pemsed by the delegates, to whom they are t# be submitted for consideration.
