" Weekly Press." , January 20. At the last meeting of the Grey Education Board, Mr W. L. Fetch, M.A., Cambridge, who conducted the recent examinations, wait appointed Inspector to the Bsard. Mr Fetch resides at Feilding and will pay two annual vUUs to the district, one for inspection and tbe other for examination. The appointment ia a popular one and is likely to give very general satisfaction. Mr Murray Thomson, who for some time edited the Inangahua Times, Reefton, haa been appointed manager of tbe Evening Star newspaper company, Nelson. He has had considerable experience iv newspaper work and Mr Thomson's many friends in fJreyuiouth are ulad to hear of his good fortune and join in wishing him success. It it said thai wo are likely to hear a good deal more in a few days about the gold find near Brunnertou, to which I referred a month or two ago. The reef, three feet wide, has been struck in one of the claims and the stone carries heavy gold. The reef is going right into tbe Julian claim and as one of the parties are driving in that direction it is anticipated tbe reef will soou be proved within the boundaries. Gold is plainly visible in the stone, and several test crushing* have yielded well. Ooe ton of stone taken from a leader near the main reef was crushed and yielded over six ounces of retorted gold.

The elections for the two extraordinary vacancies iv the Borough Council took place on Wednesday, and resulted in the election of Messrs Andrew Matheson aud E. F. Bell. The sanitary by-laws reccutly adopted by the Council, which add considerably to the local taxes, played an important part in the contest, especially in the west ward, whero the ratepayers look upon the innovation as a great hardabip. Alchough the names of the successful tenderers far the supply of coal to tho New Zealand railways during the ensuing twelve month* have not been officially announced, it is stated that the Grey Valley Company's share will amount to about 22,000 cons. The Blackball Company has also secured a contract, and rumour has it that another collier, similar to the Hesketh, is to be chartered to meet the requirements of the carrying trade. Good progress is beinjr made with the construction of the Coal Creek railway and Coal Company's line, and tbe end of the year should see the work well on towards completion. It ia intended to give Mrs and the Minxes Seddon a send oil on Tuesday. Ilia _9;h, previous to their departure for Wellington, in the shape of a farewell dance in the Eublic hall, and as the matter is in the ands of an energetic committee the affair promises to be a great success. The schools reassembled on Monday last, and as parents and guardian l ) have beeu warned that the provisions ot the School Attendance Act will be strictly enforced it goes without Haying that the attendances, for the commencement of the year, were much better than usual.
