THE FIJIAN CRICKETERS.

The Fijian team of cricketers will arrive in Christchurch to-night by the Express from the South, and will play against Canterbury to-morrow and on Saturday at Laucaster Park. The following are the names of the Native contingent:—Ratu Kadavu Levu, Ratu Tcmesia, Ratu Tui Vanua Voa, Ratu Nailovolovo, Ratu Tui Tawau, Ratu Epeti. The first four are Bau Chiefs, and tbe remaining two are Rewa Chiefs. They are fine stalwart fellows and will play in their Native costume. Although cricket is a comparatively new game to them they have shown a wonderful aptitude for it, their fialdiug beiug of a particularly high order. The white contingent comprise several first-class cricketers, the following being a few particulars conc.rning their play :— J. S. Udal—Tho manager of the team, and a great enthusiast of the game. He has beon identified closely with cricket iv Fiji for mauy years. As a cricketer ho i 3 second to none iv Fiji, his batting being a treat to witness; also an excellent field. J. C. Collins—A hue bat, fair change bowler, with a break from leg. H. M. Scott—A good bowlor, with good off break. A. B. Joske—A good left-handed bat, and fair chance bowlor. R. C.ldwell—The bowler of the team. Has played cricket in Fiji siuce its commencement, and bowled season after season with great success. L. McOkven— A splendid bat, and five free scorer. W. O. Groom—A good bowler, and strong defensive bat. As the team intend to devote any surplus in hand after defraying the expenses of tho trip to any charitable objocts in New Zealand which tho Cricket Associations may suggest, it is hoped the public will show their appreciation of such refreshing generosity by crowding the terraces of Lancaster Park to-morrowand on Saturday. A meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association was hold yesterday at the office of Mr Cuff. Present—Messrs A. M. Ollivier (in the chair), L. A. Cuff, R. B. Mathia*, C. R. Smith, J. A. Caygill, H. J. Keswick, J. Lawrence, and T. D. Harman (Hon. Secretary). It was decided that all senior, junior, and President's cup matches set down for next Saturday should be postponed to avoid any interference with the Fijian match. Mr A. JL Ollivier was elected the selector for the Canterbury Association in connection with the proposed inter-island match. After disposing of some minor matters aud deciding upon the arrangements of the Fijian match, which is to start at 2 p.m. to-morrow, subject to the visitors' Captain's consent, the meeting adjourned. The following will represent Canterbury in the match against the Fijiaua at Lancaster Park on Friday and Saturday :— L. A. Cuff, J. Fowke, A. Hasell, J. Lawrence, F. A. Madcouald, J. M'Farlane, T. North, W. Robertson, C. Treweek, W. C. Wigley, and F. Wilding. Practices for the Otago match will be held each evening when the above players with the following are requested to attend: —-H. DeMaus, A. Labatt, W. Pearce, W. J. Cotterill, T. Recso, A. X Ridley, C. Ridley and J. U. Collins.
