LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of this Council was held on Monday evening. Present— His Worship the Mayor and Crs. Brice, Cook, Owen, Badoliffe, Webb, Illingwortb, and Stinson. Correspondence was read and dealt with ac follows:—From the Crown Lands Commissioner enclosing circular ra the Fair Bents Bill, and asking to be . supplied with particulars of lands owned by the Council. . Referred to the Finance Committee. From S. Beaton and sixteen other residents in Oxford street, complaining of a cesspit in the neighbour* hood. Referred to the Sanitary Committee* From H. B. Webb, to the sewer through bia property. Received. From the WeatportCardiff Coal Company, asking for further particulars of the tests of, coal recently madejby the .engineer at the water works. The Water Supply Committee to furnish a report. An application tor a porter's license to T. Wishart was granted, Mr J. Canidy wrote submitting the name of H. Hatcher as a tenant for the British Hotel under the lease between McOavin and Co. and,the Council. The tenant was approved of. From the caretaker at the morgue, applying foraninorease of salary* Referred to the Sam* tary Committee to report upon. The Finance Committee reported -the receipts to be £1592 13s 6d, and advised payments amounting to £35719s lid. The report was adopted* The Estates Committee reported that the repairs to the British Hotel were being gone ou with. The By-Law Committee reported having carefully considered the Hawkers' and Pedlars' By-Law, and recommended it* . adoption. It was decided to hold t> •peoial meeting of the Couaoil on February 18th to v - consider the question. The report of the Sanitary Committee was received "and adopted, and it was decided not to accept Mr Coffey's offer to rent the house on Sumner road. The Engineer at the pumping station reported that during the paat two week? the pumps had.been going 129 hoars.a* against'loß hours, for the corresponding fortnight last year. The Water Supply Committee could not recommend the ex* tension of the services as desired -by Mr Waklin, but lefb the matter in the ~ hands of ' the " Council. On the motion of Or. Webb, seconded by Cγ* Illingworth it was decided, to extend the . service as desired. The Foreman of Works ' detailed the work done by the men during the. past fortnight It was decided to write to the Minister of Railways pointing out the advantage that would accrue to the Port by the running of cheap trains on Thursdays or. any other day, the fares to be, say, 9d first class, 6d second class. The Council then resolved itself into a Domain Board, and it was decided to recommend to the Works Committee the desirableness of forming a drive through the Domain to .Corsair Bay. and also to have the water supply extended to the Bay for the nee of the residents and others using theJbeaoh for picnic parties.
