' Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. London, February 4. The butter market is depressed. Some of the finest Victorian sold at 99s 6d. Some of the cherries shipped from Adelaide per the Australia, and packed in cork dust, arrived in excellent condition. The remainder were rotten owing to contact with apples and leaves. Some of the Matatua's rabbits, packed in a similar manner to those from Melbourne, realised Is, while for othes only 10d was received. At the wool sales there was only a medium selection offered, and prices were barely maintained. Many bales were withdrawn. Sydney, February 5. The Agent-General is arranging ior the exhibition of some of the Polled Angus cattle sent by»the Echuca, at leading English Agricultural Shows. Another shipment of live cattle is to be made by the Celtic King. The following is Messrs Balfoub Gutheie and Co.'s market report, dated San Francisco, 11th January :— In the interval since our last, business in all lines here, as usual at this holiday season, has ruled very quiet, and for shipment wheat has declined somewhat, though there is but a limited quantity offered at the moment, and nominal value may be placed at 87& to 90 cents per cental, f.o.b. Freights to the United Kingdom continue quiet, the position of wneat forcing ex-, porters to pursue a cautions policy j a few charters have been effected at jthe close at 275"6 d, iron visseVfor ~braeri. * "*' *•:"-: ' At Portland and at Tacomaa.fair business has been passing, and iron vessels may be quoted at about 32s 6d and 31a 3d from the two ports for orders respectively. Salmon — Market very quiet, without change. . Hops just about hold their own, though there is little business passing. Coffee remains steady at 21 to 22 cents per lb for the best. Fruits remain without special feature 6f interest. Goals—Quiet, with no prospects of higher prices. Shipments from British Columbia are again increasing and affect the sale of Australian. Exchange^—We quote bankers' 60 days' eight bills on London 4 dollars 88 cents, merchants' do. on London 4 dollars 87 cents, merchants' do. on Sydney 4 dollars 72£ cents. . : . ■■:
(PEES 3 ASSOCIATION TELEGEAM.) . WELLINGTON; February 5. Mr Robert Pauling, ; the chief goods manager of the North-Eastern Railway Company, is in Wellington endeavouring to arrange that frozen meat vessels shall visit Hall docks, which are the property of the Company, for the purpose of distributing meat to Manchester and' other large towns. Mr Pauling points out that, while vessels load at several ports in this colony they at present discharge only; at; London* to the detriment of the provincial trade.
