WELLINGTON NOTES.
(By Telegraph.] (from oub correspondent.) WELLINGTON, February 5. There is a movement afoot here, projected by the right stamp of men, for the organisation of an International Exhibition to be held in Wellington during the coming summer season. Communications have been received from the officials of the Hobart Exhibition to the effect that the best of the British and foreign exhibits, together with the art collection, can be secured if a suitable building for their display can be assured. The cite of the proponed Exhibition is the initial difficulty, and one that will be difficult of a satisfactory settlement. Exoepting what is known as the Basin Reserve, an area of some ten acres, there is not a flat open space accessible and ap parently obtainable in the whole of the town district", and this particular area, besides being a most desirable open space from the sanitation standpoint, v sacred to the sports of the young athletes of the city, who would rise as one man to " collar low " the exhibitionist invader. Hingeing upon this question of site is the character of the buildings, whether they shall be temporary and disappear with the departure of the exhibits, or whether a main structure shall remain that may be turned to lasting account as an art gallery and museum. However, when all these initial difficulties are disposed of the promoters will be only at the beginning, for the crux of the question will be,:—Will the citizens find the money ? Of course, if the exhibition proved attractive the capital would be largely, if not wholly, recouped; but have they the enterprise to commit themselves to such a liability? This deponent, at any rate, is not prepared to offer any opinion.
