HAWKE'S BAY.
Napier. January 29. The home engaged at the Wellington Meeting returned home on Saturday. Maher and Gooieman were unsuccessful, the last-named being unfortunate in running into a place with his horses three times withouc once scoring a win. Con : Boyle did well for the Hon. J. D. Ormond. three events falling to his share, and as the horses were well supported by the stable each time, they probably got back more than they lost over North Atlantic s defeat in the Cup. Penrose in the Hack Race gave the public a good win, but the stable are not heavy bettors and did not profit much by the victory. However, Golden Plover'e party backed their representative freely in the Farewell Handicap, and he landed the money for them, but with nothing to spare. Heavenly Twin was much fancied here for the Juvenile Handicap on the second day of the meeting, and if her head had been as far in front as it was behind St. John At the post a good many of our backers would have " struck He." Dreamland was " offcolour " ac the meeting, though fit enough when taken down. She went off her feed away from home. Searchlight did Splendid work on the track, but when it came to racing she showed that she disliked a severe struggle* The daughter of Iris Is like her dam, unreliable.
