RICCARTON.
The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on January 14th. Present—Mr Hail (Chairman), and Messrs Nun week, Boag, Feather and Jackson. Mr A. S. Ford waited on the Board, and asked when the streets in Sail's township, Papanui, would be gravelled. The Chairman said this was one of the works proposed to be carried out before wintar. Correspondence was read:— From the Selwyn County Couucii (in reply), stating that there being no funds to the credit of the district, the Council cannot see its way to vote anything towards the maintenance of the main roads. From the Selwya County Council, stating that the purchase of small birds and blackbirds would be discontinued. It was resolved to continue the purchase of small birds on the' Road Board's behalf, and a sum of £10 was voted for the. purpose. From the Drainage Board, authorising the remittance of the rates on the Papauui .Kecreation Reserve. The Collector stated that the amonnt had been collected. and\ paid in to the credit of the .Drainage Board. The Clerk was directed to reply accordingly. From Mr A. M. Philpotl,"applying for a remittance of the road rates on the' Papanui Recreation Reserve. It was resolved to comply with the request. From Mr C. Lockhart, stating that his house at Papanui had been valued in 1895 before ie was completed. It was resolved to reply that the property had been valued strictly in accordance with the Rating Act, 1882. From Messrs Wilding and Lewis, re preparation of the deed of concession to the Tramway Company. The Clerk stated that he had referred Messrs Wilding and Lewie to the Board's correspondence with the Tramway Company. From Messrs Stringer and Cresswell, on behalf of Mr Sail, asking the Board to clear out the dh»in in Langdin's road, so as to improve the drainage in that neighbourhood. It was resolved to comply with* the request. Fcom Mr McNamara, calling attention to the condition of the bridge and the drains on the road near his brewery at, Fendalton. Referred to the Surveyor for a report. From Mr C. L. Davis, water race manager, in reply, stating that no race water would be allowed to flow into the channels on the West Coast road, and that the Council cannot contribute towards the cost of making a drain in Haslam's road as proposed. The Board decided to make the drain to the river so as to prevent the flooding of private property. From Mr G. W. Russell inclosing resolutions passed by the promoters of the proposed Borough of Riccarton. The Chairman was authorised to communicate, with the honourable the Colonial Secretary on the matter and to forward a copy to the Selwyn County Council. The Board took into consideration the petition received in November last from residents of Park Lane, Lower Riccarton, and was of opinion that before altering the name from Park "Lane it would be advisable to refer the matter'to Mr Washbourne, the original owner and nominator of the roads in that district; The Surveyor* report was approved. The. Rate Collector's report was read. After passing accounts, &c, the Board adjourned.
