PROHIBITION LEAGUE AND THE MINISTERS.
A meeting of ministers, convened by the Chriatchurcn Prohibition League, was held in the Prohibition Rooms yesterday afternoon, when representatives of several Methodist and Presbyterian Churches attended, together with Brigadier Hoakih and officers of the Salvation Army. The Reva. Wood, Presbyterian (of. Masterton), and Ready, Bible Christian (of Diinedin), also were present. Letters of sympathy and regret for enforced absence were read from the Rev. (i. A. Scott (of Sydenham), H. R. Dewabury, Jos. J. Doke, A. Mitchell, P. R. Monro and 8. J. Garlick (of Rangiora), and J. S. Smalley (of Kaiapol). The following letters from the Dean and the Bishop's Chaplain were received, as also one Irora Pastor Birch (published in bar issue of yesterday):— The Deanery, January 15th, 1895. Dear Sir,—l nave the honour to acknowledge with thanks the invitation of the Cbristchurch Prohibition League to the conference proposed to be held at the office of the Prohibitionist pa Thursday next, the 17th inst. I must beg, however, to be excused from attending the meeting, as my viewa are not those which are advocated by the Prohibitionist. For the same reason I shall be glad to have the paper discontinued, as vis not sent to mc by my wish. —Believe mc, yours faithfully, Hbnby Jacobs. U. Cole, Esq., Hon. Sec. Dear Sir, —I regret not being able to assist the object in view, in the way proposed, aa lam of opinion—and indeed strongly convinced — that prohibition ia neither justifiable nor effectual-—Yours faithfully, Fbas. Seorgie, Hooking, Dawaon, j Sydney Baker, Frank W. laitt, Major BrnntneU, S.A.J -Messrs Geo. Bowron and Wake." On the motion. of the Rev. Lux-1 FOKO—" That thue meeting. deplores the j prevalence of the evils arising from the salej of intoxicating liquors, and affectionately I and earnestly urges the Churches to clear themselves from all p&Ettcip&tioa from a traffic so deadly***
