THE LAWN TENNIS TOURNAMENT.
I * SO THB EDITOR-OV THE FBESS. 1 Sißj—ln "your''report or"L&wn Tennis Tournament" I notice (hat in" 'reference to the fiual in the Men's Handicap.' Doubles yon discount the win made by two members' of-the Springfield Club, of which I am President, by saying that Gorton and McLeod played a " lob" game against the Marshails * in- the final round, and thus prevented their more skilful opponents from having a chance of palling np their handicap by work at the net." How, sir, I want to ask you is this generons on your part ? I am quite sure' , that the Marshalls t»ke no exception' to' how their opponents elect to carry out the game, providing, of coarse, that they keep within the' regulation. The other reports of this event cait .no reflections on the play of the members of the Springfield Club, and, after all, what is skilful play in tennis. I take it that it is to-, place the ball co as .to prevent your opponent from making a nuccessfui return.— Yours, £&, ' . . BCBKBX COLTHABT, President Springfield L.T.C. Sheffield, B&xmher&lst, 1894/ [Our report was not intended to disparage the play of the two Springfield players, ■which was quite correct- in ' the. circumatancea.—Ed. JPeess.] -y - ,
