THE WEATHER.
Onr Little River correspondent writes:— The last few days has been extremely hot and dry and the effect upon the cocksfoot is very marked. The ripening proceeds rapidly and some of the fields will be ready foi the reapers in the course of a few days. The effect of the heat upon the roads is very unfavourable and the evil has'been intensified by the number of stock that travel upon them. Stones, large and numerous, have been loosened and are rolling about, very much to the discomfort of those who walk, ride or drive.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) OAM ARU, December 31. The weather has been exceptionally dry for some time bac_, and the grass is suffering a good deaL DUNEDIN, December 31. Much-needed rain showers fell this afternoon, and this evening there was a smart tall for fully an hour. This had the effect of keeping the people indoors, and though visitors from the country are fairly numerous, the streets are quieter than usual on New Year's eve.
