Press Association—By Telegraph—Corr/right. CHITRAL. London, December 30. The Government has decided to retain possession of Chitral. Lord Elgin, Viceroy of India, and Mr H. H. Fowler, Secretary of State for India, strongly opposed the evacuation. FEDERAL PRIVY COUNCIL. Sir Heury Wrenfordsley, in bis letter in The Times, points out that Victoria is markedly in favour of protection while New South Wales is disinclined to change. He considers, therefore, that a uniform tariff for all Australia ia impossible. FARMERS'CONVENTION. The Yorkshire farmers are holding a convention to consider the best means of coping with the existing depression. BONUS-FED BUTTER. The Marquis of Londonderry urged that tbe commission now sitting should take into consideration the alarming iucrease of bonus-fed butter from Australia. Mr Lowther, of Kent, urged that it would he unjust to levy a tax on home produce while imports were freely admitted from outside. MUNITIONS OF WAR. Brazil has bought arms and ammuninition from the Armstrongs to the value of a million sterling. THE ARMENIAN ATROCITIES. Mr Gladstone, replying at Hawarden to a deputation of Armenian delegates, said the Sultan denied the attooities in Bulgaria in 1576, which were afterwards proved in evidence. His prevarication ou thab occasion pointed to the conclusion thab the massacres in Armeuia were a repetition of what had occurred in Bulgaria. The Turks were a scourge to the world by their misdeeds. He had personally seen their territory reduced by one-half, which he claimed was God _ decree against cruelty and injustice. If the present reports were true, the Turkish Government was a disgrace to civilisation and a curse to mankind.
THE CANADIAN CONFERENCE. December 31. Tlie limes, in its review of the year, says the leading evenb in the history of the colonies was the Canadian Conference. FRANCE AND MADAGASCAR. Paris, December 30. Tbe French are preparing twelve flat-bottomed guv boats to operate against the Hovas on the rivers in the interior of Madagascar. IMPORTANT ARRESTS. December 31. Warrants have been issued by the police for the arrest of a number of bankers, politicians and contractors, this beiug the outcome of the enquiry which was held into the affairs of the French Southern Railway Company. Another scandal is feared.
THE CZAR AND CZARINA. St. Petersbtj--, December 30. Tbe Czar and Czarina intend to travel through the whole of Russia and the Caucasian provinces next year. NEWSPAPER BLACKMAIL SCANDALS. Sinqapoee, December 30. The dismisal of de Lanessan, Gover-nor-General of Freuch Indo-China i has caused a sensation. I. was the outcome of newspaper blackmail scandals; documents fouud in the possession of the imprisoned editors proving bis complicity in certain transactions.
OBITUARY. Calcutta, December 30. The Maharajah of Mysore is dead. THE NATIVE CONGRESS. The Native Congress argued that London demanded representative Government, and India would not resb until it was granted similar privileges. THE WAZIRIS QUIET. Sir William Lockhart has advised the Government that the Waztris have ceased opposition, and he is sending a party to capture the Chief, Moullab, who has fled to Dewar.
