REMAINS UNPAID FOR.
The Waipawa Mail furnishes a crushing rejoinder to the statement that there was "no old Madeira, no crusted port, no rich Burgundy" at the banquet given to Captain Russell. It .may afford some consolation to know' (says our contemporary) that the beer, " the inferior claret," and the "couple of bottles of barley bree," with which "tbe corned beef and cabbage " were washed down, were paid for. No doubt this Tory practice of paying for what you eat and drink should be condemned. At any rate it affords a contrast to what was done when the Liberals of Hawke's Bay gave a champagne spread to a Minister of the Crown when he visited Waipawa some twelve months ago. On that occasion "the glorious vintage of Champagne " flowed freely, and everyone had a good time, except the landlord who supplied the liquor. Although he has made repeated requests for the coin, he has not been able to get a settlement, and the wine supplied for the "spree" remains unpaid for until this day.
