SOUTHLAND.

fNVERCARG__,_,, November 20. On the Prince of Wales* Birthday and the following day the Winton J.C. brought off the first, racing fixture of tb_ Southland season. - Tbe attendance was above the average as was also the sum invested on the totalisator. There were two hurdle races at the meeting, and on the first day the South Canterbury bred Chevy, by Ham, looked like winning easily when he struck a hurdle and lost his rider. The favourite, Silvertail, also bred in Canterbury, feil at tbe last jump, and the Duntroon mare. Fairy Queen, then won easily. On the second day a locally bred aspirant for hurdle honours made his appearance in the shape of the Alluvium gelding, Huntsman, and, iv the bands of W. Duncan—just, back from the North Island where be rode with some successhe won easily from Silvertail. To return to the first day. Reflection, by Tasman— Moonray, after a good race accounted for the Tradesmen's Handicap. The. Winton Cup was won easily at the finish by the ancient Leinster, by Albany— Zelica, who is the property of the local jockey-trainer, Alex. M'Kenzie. Leinster was chased home by the j Tasman—Vanity horse Tassy, who was 1 carrying 91b overweight. Dors, who was hardly well, finished third. The Maiden Plate was won by a neatly shaped little colt by Le Loup—Marjory Moore, by name Master Moore, beating among others the Canterbury bred horse April, by July, and the North Islander Balfour. Tassy won the Flying Handicap from Reflection and others in comfortable fashion. The start in this race was a very bad one, and Reflection, ridden by W.. Buddicombe, was let oft lengths in frout of the field, two of whom were left at the post altogether, taking no part in the race. Leinster was to the fore on the second day and won two races. The first was the Stewards* Purse (after a good race), the second was the Prince of Wales Stakes, in which be beat Dora. Reflection, and Master Moore. After this race the son of , Albany, who has long borne the character of being an unsound animal, was very sore, and will probably be spelled for a time. The Welter Handicap went to the gold fields-bred Kiwi by Cheap Jack—Tui, and the Consolation was won by burefoot,? by Hilarious—Lad vof the Lake. The Southland Racing Club are going to try a one-day meeting on Boxing Day with a somewhat limited stake programme. I am sure they will find it more profitable than those (two days) of ths past few seasons.

The Wyndham Racing Club race on New Year's Day,-and their programme will be much the same as usual.

i Robin has arrived home from the C. J.C. meeting, and to all outward appearance he shows no signs of his accident in the Curragb Steeplechase. Mr J. Irving's Lady of the Lake has produced a colt foal to Lorraine (about November sth). ....,, .* After his display at Winton I hear it is unlikely that Silvertail will journey to the D.J.C. Spring Meeting for the Hurdle s races, but our other Soutblander, Master-," piece, by Master Agues—Highland Las 9, who is trained by James Lawson, may make the trip for the illegitimate events. - Tassy showed symptoms of shin soreness at Winton and did not run the second day. He was looking very well and ran as honest as could be wished, in fact, I hardly j knew him to be the same horse I saw competing at Riccarton the year Prime Warden won the Great Autumn Handicap.
