WEIGHT-GUESSING COMPETITION.

TO THB EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sir,—When I ventured to criticise the result of the Kirwee weight-guessing competition in your paper the other day it waa hardly in the expectation of bringing the whole house of H. Matson and Co. about my ears. Public men in their public acts muefc expect to be criticised, and so long as nothing unfair or underhand is suggested they have no right to resent it. However, aa offence seems to have been taken where certainly none was intended I must back down with * the best grace possible. In my igoorance I supposed that the party who came nearest to the three printed conditions would be thewhiner, that's where I made the mistake. However, my argument that if Mr Rutherford had judged the weight of the sheep at 6Qib, end the ekiae at 9*sd, he would etiJJ Ret the iprize, ia now confirmed by Maeaca rifiiifffljlilijjiiJ and trying to win a prize without, pitying entrance money (thanka to the liberality oi Messrs H. Mataon and Co.) is very fanny, but scarcely what one would expect to see over fluoh a nipfttare, M My wiling for a reply from mc. The farming community generally I am sure appreciate the public spirit, shown by Messrs Matson in going to great expense and trouble over these cornpetitioni, and no doubt will see that it is rewarded in due course. To finish; had the competition been carried out as I supposed my name would" never have appeared on the prize M at all. —Yours, &c, R. Darling.
