NOTES AND MEMORANDA.

Elsewhere will be found a notification of a special sale of rams aud ewes at Rakaia by Messrs Miles and Co. on Monday next. Mr W. W. Collins will lecture at the Lyceum to-morrow on "Blind lecders of the blind." There will be orchestral selections at seven o'clock. Last night Mr Gilbey gave a lecture on shorthand and type writers at the Oddfellows' Hall. There was a large attendance, and the lecturer dealt very intelligently with his subject.' The remarks of the lecturer were illustrated by a number of limelight views exhibited by Mr Crook. In the interval an exhibition of typewriters took place. There is now on view at Mr Gibbs' shop, Cathedral square, a wonderfully clever picture by Mr J. Gibb of the entrance at Lytteiton Heads by the s.s. Gothic. Tne bluff Godley Head, with the lighthouse, the sun shining on the brown tussocks of the hills, and the great steamer gliding majestically around, has been most artisj tically pourtrayed by Mr Gibb. The able management oi the stables at Sumner by Mr Hayward is a guarantee of success iv the present venture. On Tuesday Mr H. Cavie, butcher, RanI giora, was unfortunate in losing a very fine heifer, which died suddenly, and next day he had the ill luck to have a hue cow choked with a turnip. Detective Bailey, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Christchurch, where it is probable he may be stationed at no distant date. Quite a long list of names have been received a3 entries for the Pioueer Bicycle Club's race meeting on March 17th, among the number being most of our crack riders. C. E. Hall, F. Truman, A. Dorm, and W. F. Oliver hail from Timaru, B. F. Sutherland is representing Invercargill, S. Macdonald and R. H. Appleby are from Oamaru, and W. G. Murray, W. Hefford, and A. J. Daly are coming up to ride for the Ashburton Club. With these riders couipetiug against our local cracks there is but fine weather needed to make the meeting one of the most ' successful yet held by the well-known Pioneer Bicycle Club. There is on the programme a 220 yds flat handicap, and with pedestrians like Reeves, Robinson, Hariey, and Carl competing the event should be an interesting one. At the Temple of Truth to-morrow Mr I Worthington will lecture at 11 a.m. on I "Agents of Hope"; and at 7 p.m., on " Wounded in the Heel." At the next popular concert on Thursday, 15th inst., at the Tuam street Theatre, a programme has been arranged of Irish national songs and dances. Mr McNaught will lecture on the " New Australian Industrial Commonwealth Association" at the Oddfellows' Chambers, on Tuesday next, at 8 p.m. A special general meeting of the Honorary Reserve Corps will be held at the orderly room on Monday next, at 4 p.m. A district order, published elsewhere, notifies that the competition for prize medals by marksmen of 1893 who are efficient will take place at the Bromley range ou Saturday, March 17th, at 10.30 a.m. The Ward Linder Dramatic Company will start a tour of Canterbury districts on Monday, viaiting Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Leeston, Southbridge, Oxford, &c. They open for two nights at Akaroa on Monday ne:tt. The Rev. H. T. Robjohns, representing the British and Foreign Bible Society, is in Christchurch staying at Warner's for a few days. A very satisfactory rehearsal of the children's concert to be given in tbe Tuam street Hall on Tuesday next, was held last night. Mr W. Seagrave, the advance agent of the Howe-Spang Company, arrived last night from the South to make arrangements for the season. The privileges for the St. Patrick's Day meeting of the Heathcote Trotting Club will be sold by Messrs Toiiks, Norton and Co. on Wednesday next at 2 p.m., at their rooms. The Rev. Mr Chodowski will deliver bis popular lecture on the " Talmud," at the Oddfellows' Hall, on Monday next,<the 12th instant. The lecture will include the following subjects :—Social Ethics, Sanitation, Medicine, Jurisprudence, Philosophy, Woman and her place, Hell and the Devil, and Temperance in its relation to Prohibition.
