SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

«_- A special meeting of the West Christchurch Committee was held on Wednesday evening, all the members beiug present. There were eighteen opplicatious for the position of infant mistress, the Board indicating that tho choice lay between nine of them probably, and twenty-nine applications for the position of assistant teacher. After reducing the names to a few in each case, a ballot was taken, aud Miss Grant was chosen for the infant mistress department, and Miss Margaret Morriaon for assistant teacher. The ordinary meeting of the Woolston Committee was held on Monday evening, all the members being present except Mr Gimblett, for whom an apology was received. Mr McGregor wrote resigning his position as second muster of the school, he having received the appointment of head- ( master at West Lyttelton School. The Committee congratulated him on his appointment, and his request to be allowed to leave at once agreed to. It was decided to recommend to the Board of Education Mr Kennedy for the appointment of second master, and ask the Board to invite applications for a third master. The headmaster reported that the attendance was still increasing; roll number 603, and the average attendance last month 526. It wuc resolved to interview the Board at its next meeting and point out the absolute necessity of aa infant school being built at ones owing to the crowded condition of tht school. The Chairman was requested to write a letter of condolence and sympathy to Mr Patterson in his sad bereavement. The monthly meeting of the Leeeton Committee took place oa Monday evening. Present—Messrs J. Barnett (Chairman), Rev. W. Grant, Messrs R. S. Cook and T. W. Durant. The head master reported th« number on the roll 175, average attendance 118, number enrolled 6, also stating that Miss Webster, pupil teacher, had again passed her examination successfully, and that this made three successive years that she had passed, and she had been placed on the honours list. It was decided that the Secretary write to the Board pointing out) that the pupil teacher had failed in his examination owing to illness, and recommend-, ing the Board to pay the ÜBual bonus to the master as though he had passed. It was decided to write to Miss Webster congratulating her on her successful pass. The monthly meeting of the Southbridge Committee was held on Monday. PresentMessrs C. H. Willis (Chairman), J. Frame, S. Moore, R. C. Burns, George Marquand, R. Webster and Dr. T. J. Withers. Au apology for absence was received from the Rev. E. Whitelaw. The master's report showed number ou roll 303, average attendance 240. The Football Club was granted the use of the school paddock upon the usual conditions. The Kimberley Committee held its bi-monthly meeting on the Ist inst., all the members being present. The Inspector's report was read in Committee. It woi resolved —"That a very hoarty vote ol thanks be accorded the teachers for th< excellence of the report, and that the sam« be recorded on the minutes and conveyed by the Chairman to Mr F. J. Haymau, th« principal teacher." It was decided that arrangements be made with regard to allotting the prizes offered by Mr A, Saunders, M.H.R., and Mr H. W. McClelland for truthfulness among the scholara. The monthly meetiug of the Doylestoo Committee was held on Tuesday. PresentMessrs Rennie (Chairman), Rigby, Mould ey, Kissel, Rtckel and S. C. Doyle. The master's report showed an average attendance of 120, roll number; 147, which was l considered very satisfactory. ■ The Board wrote agreeing to the appointment of Miss .. Rigby as pupil teacher. It was resolved to push on with the bath. The Committee j resolved to take action in the cose of a gir? ! who had been scut to service though still under the school ago. I The usual monthly meeting of the St. j Albans School Committee was held or Wednesday evening. Present—Messrs T. Palmer (Chairman), Norris, Capper, MoCleave, Morgan, Owen, Chaplin and ' Brooker. The report of the head master was read, which showed that the number oi scholars on the roll was 584, average at* | tendance 482.8, highest attendance 516, lowest attendance 458, A sum of £2 2s was voted out of tbe prize fund for swimming prizes for the children attending the ! schools. An invitation was received from the Teachers' Picnio Committee inviting the members to the annual gather ing on Saturday j next. Ordered to be acknowledged with thanks. As the 24th instant (Lady Glasgow's birthday) falls on a Saturday It was decided to observe the holiday in her honour on Tuesday, the 27th instant. The report of the mistress of the Side School showed that the number on the roll was 121 and the average attendance 106. Sundry ! requisites for both schools were granted!. I Correspondence was received from the mistress of the Side School re pupil teachers. After a lengthy discussion the correspondence was referred to the Head Master for his report thereon. It was resol/ed to j recommend to the incoming Committee the I desirability of placing both. the Main and Side Schools under;the control of ithe Head I Master, of. the borough schools.
