SHEEP STEALING AT WAIMATE.
All over the district of Waimate complaints are great over the loss of sheep, which are unaccounted for by death, and there is no doubt a great deal of aheep sbealing in small lots is carried on. An unsuccessful attempt was recently made on a sheep in fCnotlingry Park, Waimate. Its owner noticing the animal lame, caught and examined ib, and found one of bhe front legs nearly cub to the bone all round the shank, and a piece of strong cord in the wound. There was also another piece of cord round one of the hmd legs. The sheep had evidently been caught, and its hind and fore legs tied together, and it was then left by its captor for a more convenient time for carrying away. In the meantime the animal's struggles broke the cord, and ib escaped. The thief was evidently a good judge, as he selected a dry four-tooth halfbred ewe in excellent condition.
